After a long period of silence Kati Kovács returned into the Hungarian pop music life last year for the request of a young but in the jazz scene very much respected band: the Qualitons. (Ernő Hock – bass guitar, Mátyás Premecz – keyboard, Hunor G. Szabó – vocals, Barna Szőke – guitar, Káosz Kanada – rattle, cowbell). The guys who played beat-funk even before are now playing songs earlier recorded by the singer which are not only bringing up the tearful nostalgia of the legendary old hits but also showing a brand new face of Kati Kovács. Truly elegant new appearance is this; where we can witness how the singing contest winner charming young girl with the stunning voice evolves to an experienced mature and cool jazz singer. Kati Kovács is such a fascinating performer that she fills the space not only with her voice but also with her presence.
The formation is currently at the phase of experimenting and getting to know each other, they have only had 3 concerts since October 2009 when they debuted on A38 boat. We can thus still grab the sensitive atmosphere of the beginning, the appearance of the young musicians with the highly professional but very modest singer.
This set up is still full of possibilities, they may encounter with unexpected situations to be solved, new songs, old evergreens, secret smiles to each other and unexpected harmonies. Maybe this is the time when it is the best to observe and listen to a band, and within a few years we may be remembering these concerts as the band’s first steps towards world fame. (The odds on this are pretty high.)
After the concert the Tordas Radio Party will start with Tóni Vida who will certainly not miss the obvious and will put on some old bakelite from the times of dance contests…
