CocoRosie – 26th July

CocoRosie – 26th July

One of the most exciting formations of the 21st century is CocoRosie, the band led by the mythical sisters living in Paris but with American origins. The band that carries on with the Björkian magical singing genre has immediately gained the attention of the media only with the legends around them. Their accordingly unclassifiable musical style justly gained popularity for their first album that they recorded in their bathroom. Following the first two style-albums, the third one that contains much more popular songs, Grey Oceans, is also giving hard time for those trying to classify it. As part of their album release tour they give a concert at the end of July in Budapest, Gödör Klub where everyone can decide on their own whether the music they play is pop, classic, happy, sad, modern or traditional.

Their eventful life, migratory childhood with parents, separation from each other then unexpected reunion, the father following native Americans and the slightly naïve (life)artist mother are most likely all influencing the creation of this music with such magical atmosphere. Their natural and artless behaviour on their concerts and albums with the household appliance and children toy instruments are also counterpoints of the band as much as the mix of the opera singer sister’s trained voice with the raw singing of the other. Their experimental and exciting musical world is in pleasant opposition with the classical staging way of chansons. It is a mix of dark and shiny moods that changes with the moment, Yin and Yang. The harmony of the contradictions makes this band such an outlaw that you will either love it or hate it, they have no acts that could result indifferent reaction. On their concerts they create a stage-like fairy tale atmosphere; on their recordings they use surprisingly modern techniques.

In their freshly released album Grey Oceans the dark and gloomy tunes are replaced with more pleasant and playful storyteller songs. The solo guitar (or rather noise) from the earlier albums is now completed with smooth electronic rhythms, soft harp and piano play thanks to the famous jazz pianist Gael Rakotondrabe. Additionally impact from the Arabic and Far East cultures can be recognised in the songs. The album is an eclectic mix of folk and electronic music. Eastern spirituals, industrial noises and soft instruments make the atmosphere even more chaotic so that from this grey sea, from the chaos a final harmony could emerge that we can only describe as: CocoRosie.
The tickets can be purchased in advance for 3500 HUF or on the day of the concert on the spot: 3900 HUF.

CocoRosie – 26th July

CocoRosie gave an enchanted concert at the end of July in Gödör Club. This is the video summary of the night with an interview with the girls, from which you get to know what is it, that makes them bored, what kind of music influenced their sounds, and they say some stuff about their moustache too. Enjoy!

CocoRosie: Grey Oceans album release – 26th July – trailer

The new album of CocoRosie and the teaser video are both visualizing the oceans in the title. The spooky castles, theatrical costumes, painted moustaches all nicely show the atmosphere that the sisters will bring to us in Gödör at the end of July. This year the true fans go to holidays to the Grey Oceans!
