New York Jazzgödör: Chris Potter Underground, Tariqa – May, 7th, 2010.

Chris Potter was a sheer prodigy, he started his musical career at the age of threee, and by the time he was ten, he played alt saxophone in an enviable way. He has been giving concerts since the age of 13. He inherited his eclectic musical world from his parents, who had got a wide selection of music from the classics to contemporary rock.

By the time he had graduated at the Manhattan School of Music, he was a virtuoso on many different instruments. He had been nominated for a Grammy award many times, and he is the youngest musician has won the Danish Jazzpar award ever. He said, all he would like is, if people, who are listening to his music would be dancing for it too.

His Underground formation has been existing for 6 years. His bebop-like saxophone playing gives a very unique sound to their concerts, and his other musicians are completing that in a way it sounds like one person is playing all the instruments. His got such well qualified musicians as Adam Rogers on guitar or Fima Ephron on bass. Nate Smith’s drum playing is so sleek that you can hardly notice it until it comes to the drum solo, when you get fascinated by it.

Dashing, but modest team, a real audience favourute, always suggested to listen to them live!

After the overseas musicians, as usual in New York Jazz Gödör, we can listen to a Hungarian jazz band, Tariqa led by saxophone virtuoso Mihály Dresch. Their music is an alloy of jazz and folk supported with a gembrin (Moroccan instrument) played by Said Tichiti. Miklós Lukács is playing on dulcimer, Ádám Meggyes on trumpet, and András Halmos on drums.

Entrance fee is 2500 HUF.
